Smith Wins Slalom Title at 61st Nautique Moomba Masters

U.S. water ski athlete Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) won the men’s slalom title at the 61st Nautique Moomba Masters International Invitational, presented by GM Marine, March 11-14, on the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia. Some of the world’s top water ski athletes competed for titles in slalom, tricks and jumping.
Smith scored ½ buoy at 43 feet off in the finals to clinch the victory. Great Britain’s Freddie Winter (2 buoys at 41 feet off) and Australia’s Joel Howley (2 buoys at 41 feet off) placed second and third, respectively. Smith also won the Pro Night Slalom event, scoring 3 buoys at 41 feet off.
Other event champions were: Australia’s Vennesa Vieke, women’s slalom (2-12 buoys at 38 feet off); Mexico’s Patricio Font, men’s tricks (11,810 points); Canada’s Neilly Ross, women’s tricks (10,390 points); Canada’s Ryan Dodd, men’s jump (232 feet); and Australia’s Jacinta Carroll, women’s jump (192 feet).
U.S. athlete Erika Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.) placed second in women’s tricks (10,260 points) and seventh in slalom (1-1/2 buoys at 35 feet off). U.S. athlete Taylor Garcia (Winter Garden, Fla.) placed second in men’s jump (231 feet).
In the Junior Moomba Masters, held, March 9-10, U.S. athlete Elizabeth Hall (Newnan, Ga.) placed second in jump, eighth in tricks, ninth in slalom and fifth overall. In other events, U.S. athlete Fletcher Holm (Vail, Colo.) won the Friday Night jump competition (173 feet).
