Central Regionals Tournament Recap
Wonder Lake wins the Largest Central Region Tournament to Date
Central regionals kicked off Saturday with an unprecedented 66 individual competitors followed by 8 teams, the largest competition for the region in known history. While weather from the night before brought in some obstacles in the form of tree branches and debris from up river, the competitors didn’t shy away from bringing their A-game all weekend long.
Wonder Lake may have been performing the Curse of the Mummies but there was no curse on this team. Bringing home top scores for dock and equipment, tow boat driving, pick up boat driving, sound, showmanship, production, highest individual club act, ballet, jump, barefoot, swivel, and pyramid, they nearly swept the box scores and finished in 1st place with an impressive total score of 1649.33.
Lake City’s pirates and sirens impressed with a 2nd place finish with 1267.2 and Backwater Gamblers fearless knights followed close behind with 1211.37. Also of note, Ski Broncs took the top score for doubles and Grand City made their first appearance at the regional tournament since 2014.
Ava Ameen and Tracey Patrick from Lake City took 1st place in Intermediate Swivel Pairs with their pirate routine while Brea Lebda and Paige Peshina (Wonder Lake and Chippewa Lake respectively) defied gravity with their 1st place finish in Open Swivel Pairs. Paige continued her 1st place streak in swivel open as she Dances with the Stars. Jaelyn Berner (Wonder Lake) and Chase Arevalo (Lake City) took home 1st place in swivel 360 and swivel 180 respectively.
Sheldon Bunnell and Riley Walker finished 1st in intermediate doubles while Dalton Meyers and Lily Roman discoed up to 1st place in open doubles. Backwater Gamblers finished 1st in team jump and Ski Broncs Max Schlichting took 1st in intermediate jump. Silver Lake dominated open freestyle jump with Solan Shettler and Lexie Affrica taking 1st place in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively. Lexie also earned the Female MVP award for the tournament, while Lake City’s co-show director Andrew Hawblitzel was awarded the Male MVP.
