Winter Haven To Host 2022 Show Ski Worlds

USA Water Ski & Wake Sports is pleased to announce that the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation’s Executive Board has approved the bid from the Cypress Gardens Ski Team to host the 2022 IWWF World Water Ski Show Tournament on Lake Silver in Winter Haven, Fla. The tournament is considered the capstone event of the sport’s 100th year in 2022.

Life on the Water & Gridiron: Brandon Zylstra

As the National Football League’s 2019 regular season kicked off Sept. 5, USA Water Ski & Wake Sports was keeping an eye on former Little Crow Ski Team (New London, Minn.) member Brandon Zylstra, who was seeking to make the Minnesota Vikings’ roster for the second consecutive season. A reserve wide receiver and special teams player for the Vikings in 2018, Zylstra is widely known in show skiing for his love of barefoot water skiing. He recently talked with USA Water Ski & Wake Sports about his passion for Life on the Water and his time with the Vikings, who concluded the 2019 pre-season campaign Aug. 29 with a game against the Buffalo Bills. Update 9/1/2019: Zylstra was cut by the Vikings on Aug. 31, but quickly claimed off of waivers by the Carolina Panthers.

Mad-City Wins Indmar Show Ski Nationals

Photography by Lynn Novakofski.The Mad-City Ski Team (Madison, Wis.) won the national team title at the 45th Indmar Marine Engines Division 1 Show Ski National Championships, presented by Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing, Aug. 9-11, at Hidden Lake in Warsaw, Ind. Mad-City earned high-scoring awards for Dock and Equipment Personnel, Towboat Driving, Showmanship, Sound Crew Total and Overall Show on its way to tallying a grand total 1,877.80 points and winning its first national title since 2009 when it closed out a string of four consecutive national titles (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009). Hartwick Huskys Win D2 Show Ski Nationals

The Hartwick Huskys (Manchester, Iowa) won the team title at the 19th Division 2 Show Ski National Championships, Aug. 3-4, at Kwahamot Bay in Tomahawk, Wis. Hosted by the Kwahamot Water Ski Club, the tournament featured nine teams competing for the Division 2 show ski national title. The Division 2 Show Ski National Championships is comprised of teams and/or individuals not qualified by their respective regions for the 45th Indmar Division 1 Show Ski National Championships, presented by Polk County Tourism & Sports Marketing. Oxbow Wins NSSA Eastern Regionals

The Oxbow Water Ski Show Team (Northampton, Mass.) won the 2019 NSSA Eastern Regional Show Ski Championships, July 27-28, in Northampton, Mass. Oxbow tallied a grand total 1,350.97 points after earning top scores for dock and equipment personnel, pick-up boat crews, towboat driving, showmanship and overall show. The Maine Attraction Water Ski Show Team (Sanford, Maine) placed second (1,155.97 points) and the Aqua Riders (Holland, Mass.) finished third (1,102.77 points).

Waterhawks Win NSSA Midwest Regionals

The Waterhawks Ski Team (Evansdale, Iowa) won the 2019 NSSA Midwest Regional Show Ski Championships, July 27-28, in Evansdale, Iowa. The Waterhawks tallied a grand total 1,604.83 points after earning high-scoring awards for dock and equipment personnel, pick-up boat crews, towboat driving, high individual club act and barefoot. The Midwest Ski Otters (White Bear Lake, Minn.) placed second (1,452.03 points) followed by the Twin Cities River Rats (Minneapolis, Minn.) with 1,430.67 points.

Rock Aqua Jays Win Wisconsin State Title

The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team (Janesville, Wis.) won the team title at the 53rd Wisconsin State Show Ski Championships, July 18-21, at Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids. The Rock Aqua Jays scored a grand total 1,930.06 points after earning high-scoring awards for dock and equipment personnel, pick-up boat crews, towboat driving, showmanship, sound crew total, overall show, barefoot, jump, pyramid and high individual club act. The Aquanuts (Twin Lakes, Wis.) finished second with 1,700.3 points and the Mad-City Ski Team (Madison, Wis.) placed third with 1,587.74 points.

Wonder Lake Wins NSSA Central Regionals

The Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team (Wonder Lake, Ill.) won the team title at the 2019 Central Regional Show Ski Championships, July 13-14, at Hidden Lake in Warsaw, Ind. Wonder Lake earned high-scoring awards for dock and equipment personnel, pick-up boat crews, towboat driving, showmanship, sound crew total, overall show, high individual club act, pyramid, swivel and barefoot on its way to a grand total 1,689.37 points. The Backwater Gamblers (Rock Island, Ill.), which earned high-scoring awards for ballet and jump, placed second with 1,518.93 points.

Revised 2019 NSSA Rule Book Posted

A revised version of the National Show Ski Association’s 2019 Rule Book has been posted, effective July 5, 2019. Rule 9.02 in individual competition has been updated with a statement about disproportionate-sized doubles couples. Also, an explanation of Technical Merit and Artistic Impression was added to rule 9.02.

Cypress Gardens Wins Southern Regionals

Photography by Lynn NovakofskiThe Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team (Winter Haven, Fla.) won the team title at the 2019 Southern Regional Show Ski Championships, June 22-23, in Sarasota, Fla. Cypress Gardens tallied a grand total of 1,561.63 points in edging the Sarasota Ski-A-Rees, which scored 1,532.07 points.

Rock Aqua Jays Win City of Lakes Invitational

The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team (Janesville, Wis.), the defending national champion, won the 2019 City of Lakes Invitational on Saturday at Hidden Lake in Warsaw, Ind. The Rock Aqua Jays scored a grand total of 1,785.57 points in winning the title over the Mad-City Ski Team (Madison, Wis.), which tallied 1,689.03 points.

NSSA Modifies Rules For Inclined Ramps

As one might expect, the excitement of show skiing brings some risk to the athletes. The NSSA board has put in some changes to mitigate the risk without being overly restrictive. As such, the rule regarding inclined ramps has been modified for the 2019 competition season. This will most likely be revisited for the fall board meeting. Officials having questions should contact the Officials’ Chair, Jeff Henke, before judging the tournament.

Show Skiers Win Titles At All American

The 2019 show ski season got under way on March 23 with the annual All American Water Ski Tournament at Lake Silver in Winter Haven, Fla. The tournament included show skiers from around the country competing in swivel, doubles, freestyle jumping, specialty acts and barefoot endurance.

2020 USA Water Ski Show Team Selected

The National Show Ski Association, a sport discipline organization of USA Water Ski & Wake Sports, has announced the athletes who will comprise the 2020 USA Water Ski Show Team at the 5th IWWF Show Ski World Championships, March 21-22, 2020, in Mulwala, New South Wales, Australia.
