World University Championships Cancelled

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) announced today it has cancelled the 2020 FISU World University Waterski & Wakeboard Championships that were to be held in Dnipro, Ukraine, Sept. 24-27, 2020.

The FISU Steering Committee met on Monday, June 15 and this morning we received a letter from Mr Eric Saintrond- FISU Secretary General/CEO.

In part, Mr Sainttrond's letter read as follows:

"During this challenging period most of countries keep facing today, it is FISUís duty to make cautious decisions in order to ensure the safety of all people involved in its events. As you know, we have been closely monitoring the current situation and have tried so far to react accordingly in the best possible way.

Following the discussions that were held between FISU and your Organising Committee, the situation has been reported and discussed with the FISU Steering Committee that took place on Monday, 15 June.

As a result, we hereby confirm the cancellation of the 2020 World University Waterski & Wakeboard Championship. This has not been an easy decision to make but we truly believe it is the wisest choice in these circumstances."

Needless to say, this was a painful decision for all involved but there were simply too many uncertainties involved to arrive at any other conclusion to ensure a quality event and to keep all participantís safe.

On behalf of the IWWF World University Commission, I want to thank all of you who have invested so much time and effort in preparation for these Championships. I know it's a huge disappointment for all of us but, as the world returns to a new normal, we'll pick ourselves back up and begin preparations for the 2022 FISU World University Waterski & Wakeboard Championships in Belarus.

Chairman, IWWF World University Commission
Chairman, FISU Waterski & Wakeboard Technical Committee
