Jaquess Wins Malibu Open Slalom Title

U.S. water ski athlete Regina Jaquess won the women’s slalom title on Saturday at the 2019 Malibu Open Festival at Trophy Lakes in Johns Island, S.C. Jaquess defeated Canada’s Jaimee Bull in the head-to-head final, scoring 1-1/2 buoys at 41 feet off to Bull’s 4 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off. Jaquess also finished second in women’s jumping with a distance of 176 feet. Australia’s Jacinta Carroll won the women’s jumping title, soaring 191 feet.

Great Britain’s Will Asher won the men’s slalom title, defeating U.S. athlete Nate Smith (Winter Garden, Fla.) in the head-to-head final, scoring 1 buoy at 43 feet off to Smith’s 3 buoys at 41 feet off.

Russia’s Igor Morozov won the men’s jumping title, defeating U.S. athlete Taylor Garcia (Winter Garden, Fla.) in the head-to-head final, jumping 220 feet to Garcia’s 212 feet.

In other events, Bailey Austin (Buda, Texas) won Under 21 women’s slalom (1 buoy at 39-1/2 feet off); Sean Hunter (Dothan, Ala.) won Under 21 boys’ slalom (1 buoy at 41 feet off); Brooke Baldwin (Winter Garden, Fla.) won Under 21 women’s jumping; Kristen Baldwin (Winter Garden, Fla.) won Under 17 girls’ slalom (5 buoys at 38 feet off) and jumping (127 feet); and Blaze Grubbs (Rio Linda, Calif.) won Under 17 boys’ slalom after a runoff with Canada’s Noah McCormick. After both skiers tied with scores of 3 buoys at 38 feet off, Grubbs won the subsequent runoff with a score of 4 buoys at 38 feet off to McCormick’s 0 buoys at 38 feet off. Grubbs also won Under 17 boys’ jumping (164 feet).
