Having FUN Today...Building CHAMPIONS For Tomorrow

5 Things Friday – June 7, 2019

Here’s your 5 Things Friday for June 7, 2019:

1. An exciting new addition to this year’s Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships, set for June 28-29 in Oconomowoc, Wis., is the Stillwaters Team Challenge. The Junior U.S. Open is being moved from its traditional Saturday-Sunday format to a Friday-Saturday one to allow for a separate professional cash-prize tournament on Sunday, June 30, with a team format combined to include the respective overall champions from the Junior U.S. Open.

The top-four overall skiers from the Junior U.S. Open will advance to a team round, collegiate style, where they will draft four professionals to form four five-person teams. Following the team round, the top-three skiers in each event will advance to head-to-head finals in slalom, tricks and jumping. In addition to the prize pool for the three finals, an overall score will be calculated for an additional prize pool. Confirmed pros include Regina Jaquess, Whitney McClintock-Rini, Anna Gay, Adam Pickos, Adam Sedlmajer, Rodrigo Miranda, Felipe Miranda, Martin Kolman, Dorien Llewellyn, Brooke Baldwin and more. A live webcast of the Junior U.S. Open and Stillwaters Team Challenge will be available at www.skistillwaters.com.

2. The Austin Barefoot Club will host the Austin Barefoot Blowout on Saturday and Sunday at Stevenson Ski Ranch in Conroe, Texas. Saturday’s action will include record-capability tricks and slalom, while the jump event will be Sunday morning. There also will be a boom ski/freestyle competition Saturday afternoon. 3. U.S. water ski athlete Corey Vaughn is all about putting the FUN in F tournaments, and he is backing that up by hosting the Buskey Cider Cup on Saturday and Sunday at his Bum Pass Water Ski Club in Bumpass, Va. Participants are given one round of six slalom passes to ski for one of six awards - Best Performance, Best Crash, Most Creative, Smoothest Pass, Scrappiest Pass and Best Dressed. You can ride something unique if you want to go for Most Creative Ride. Costumes and funny outfits are encouraged. Slalom all Day - Lawn Games throughout - Live Rock Band at 7 p.m. - Bonfire at 10 p.m. For more information, click here.

4. Matt Heilman and Dave Rezin are teaming up once again in leading the USA Water Ski Show Team. Heilman and Rezin, who served as co-show directors of the 2014 world champion USA Water Ski Show Team, were named co-show directors of the 2020 U.S. team last fall by the National Show Ski Association. The 2020 Show Ski World Championships will take place March 21-22 in Mulwala, New South Wales, Australia. Matt and Dave recently took the time to answer a few questions as they prepare for the biennial tournament, which the United States won in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. 5. The U.S. Center for SafeSport has announced the upcoming release of five online youth training courses. These valuable resources will be released the week of June 12, and include courses for children of pre-school age; grades K-2; grades 3-5; middle school and high school. These free online trainings are designed as an introduction for minor athletes and their parents or other caregivers to understand the importance of positive, welcoming environments in sports, where misconduct like bullying or abuse is less likely to happen, and to know where to report abuse, should it occur. Each course will be hosted on athletesafety.org and requires that a parent/legal guardian create an account to provide consent for their child to access the training. Once an account is created, parents can choose which course is best for their child based on their actual or developmental age. Each course will take less than 30 minutes to complete. A writeable PDF certificate is available at the conclusion of each training, and parents are encouraged to create one bearing their child’s name.
