Australia's Vieke Wins Queens Cup

Australia's Vennesa Vieke won the second annual SportsInsurance.com Queens Cup slalom tournament for women on Sunday at Little Mountain Lake in Maiden, N.C. The tournament, supported by Race City Marine and Nautique, offered $10,000 in cash and prizes and featured women who ski in the 30, 32 and 34 mph age groups.

Vieke defeated U.S. athlete Chelsea Mills (Cornelius, N.C.) in the head-to-head final, scoring 1-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off to Mills’ ˝ buoy at 38 feet off. For results, visit www.waterskiresults.com.  

The tournament was designed to parallel the Nautique Big Dawg World Slalom Tour, presented by O’Brien, to give women an opportunity to take center stage at an elite, world-record capability water ski site. With more than 30 athletes, the Queens Cup had a guaranteed two-round minimum, with Saturday qualifying rounds leading into Sunday’s Sweet 16 head-to-head final.

The​ ​Queens​ ​Cup​ ​scoring​ ​system​ ​allows​ ​women whose​ ​top​ ​speed​ ​is​ ​30​ ​or 32​ ​mph​ ​to​ ​ski​ ​on​ ​equal​ ​footing​ ​with​ ​those​ ​who​ ​ski​ ​34 mph.​ ​The​ ​Queens​ ​Cup​ ​was​ ​for​ ​women​ ​30​ ​years​ ​and​ ​older.​ ​
