31 Athletes Win National Barefoot Titles

Thirty-one athletes won titles at the 40th annual Barefoot Water Ski National Championships, Aug. 1-5, at Lake Grew in Polk City, Fla. More than 50 barefooters in respective divisions competed for titles in wake slalom, tricks and jumping during the five-day event. Athletes competing in two or more events were eligible for the prestigious overall titles.

The wake slalom event consisted of athletes crossing the boat wake as many times as possible in two 15-second passes (one pass in the forward position and one pass in the backward position). Tricks competitors performed as many tricks as possible in two 15-second passes. Jumpers, who were each allowed three attempts, went for distance while leaping off an 18-inch ramp.

In Open Pro Men, Keith St. Onge (Winter Haven, Fla.) won slalom (21.60 points), tricks (12,500 points) and overall (3,000.0 points), and Jason Lee (Winter Haven, Fla.) won jumping (81 feet). St. Onge also set a pending world tricks record of 12,950 points in the preliminary round. In Open Men, Jerry Kanawyer (Byron, Calif.) won tricks (3,840 points), Landen Ehlers (Austin, Texas) and Ryan Boyd (Deltona, Fla.) tied for the jumping title (63 feet), and Boyd won slalom (14.80 points) and overall (2,559.90 points)

In Open Women, Lexi McCauley (Louisville, Ohio) won slalom (7.60 points), tricks (4,000.0 points) and overall (3,000.0 points), and Alex Youngblood (Highland, Mich.) won jumping (35 feet).

In International Men, David Small (Great Britain) swept titles in slalom (18.80 points), tricks (11,450 points), jumping (84 feet) and overall (3,000.0 points). In International Women, Ashleigh Stebbeings (Australia) swept titles in slalom (17.20 points), tricks (6,650 points), jumping (68 feet) and overall (3,000.0 points).

In the Men divisions, Eric Friedle (Ofallon, Mo.) won Men A slalom (12.30 points), Mark McCauley (Shaker Heights, Ohio) won tricks (2,870 points) and Rick Stenson III (Buffalo, Minn.) won jumping (37 feet) and overall (2,522.65 points). In Men B, David Wheeler (Lone Jack, Mo.) won slalom (10.10 points), and Friedle won tricks (1,450 points), jumping (36 feet) and overall (3,000.0 points). In Men C, Dillon Brouch (Appleton, Wis.) won slalom (6.50 points) and overall (2,000.0 points), while Clif Martin (Eaton, Ohio) won tricks (380 points). In Masters Men, Joe Knapp (Rockford, Minn.), who has competed in all 40 Barefoot Nationals, won slalom (10.20 points), and Jimmy Tauras (Austin, Texas) won tricks (1,360 points), jumping (29 feet) and overall (2,686.27 points). In Senior Men, Gene Burrish (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won slalom (5.30 points), tricks (720 points) and overall (2,000.0 points). In Veteran Men, Alfred Hager (Stuart, Fla.) won slalom (2.90 points), tricks (320 points) and overall (2,000.0 points). In Super Vet Men, Don Simon (Ocklawaha, Fla.) won slalom (2.88 points), tricks (420 points) and overall (2,000.0 points). Fellow Super Vet Men competitor Jim Boyette (Orlando, Fla.) joined Knapp as the only two skiers to have competed in all 40 Barefoot Nationals.

In the Women divisions, Lauren Ehlers (Austin, Texas) won Women A slalom (8.10 points), jumping (27 feet) and overall (3,000.0 points), while Elizabeth Davison (Eaton, Ohio) won tricks (860 points). In Women B, Lynae Newby (Tigard, Ore.) won slalom (2.80 points), tricks (560 points) and overall (2,000.0 points). In Masters Women, Carol Jackson (Ocklawaha, Fla.) won slalom (5.00 points) and overall (2,000.0 points), while Claudia Landon (Post Falls, Idaho) won tricks (290 points). In Veteran Women, Sharon Carlson (Conover, Wis.) won slalom (0.48 points), tricks (50 points) and overall (2,000.0 points).

In Junior Boys, Logan Walter (Orange Park, Fla.) won Boys A slalom (13.20 points), while Stefan Lippelgoos (Winter Haven, Fla.) won tricks (2,980 points), jumping (41 feet) and overall (2,810.61 points). In Boys B, Brett Swanbom (Land O Lakes, Fla.) won slalom (4.70 points), jumping (34 feet) and overall (2,707.32 points), while Easton Olsen (Roy, Utah) won tricks (1,640 points).

In Junior Girls, Grace Petzold (Mequon, Wis.) won Girls A slalom (7.20 points), tricks (1,230.0 points) and overall (2,000.0 points).
