5 Things (And More) To Know This Week

Here is what you need to know for the week of July 17:

1. The U.S. Under 21 Water Ski Team earned the overall team silver medal and five U.S. water ski athletes combined to win seven medals, including four gold, in respective events at the 8th Under 21 Water Ski World Championships, July 13-16, at the Sentosa Water Ski Club in Dnipro, Ukraine. 2. After winning gold medals at the 16th Junior Water Ski World Championships (January) and 8th Under 21 Water Ski World Championships (this past weekend), U.S. athlete Anna Gay has the opportunity to accomplish the rarest of feats by winning gold medals in tricks in the same calendar year at the Junior Worlds, Under 21 Worlds, World Games (July 25-27) and Elite Worlds (Sept. 3-10). Stay tuned.

3. The road to the 75th GOODE Water Ski National Championships continues this week with the Southern Regional Water Ski Championships at Lymanland USA in Duncanville, Ala. Look for live scoring at www.waterskiresults.com

4. The 51st Wisconsin State Show Ski Championships, the world’s largest water ski tournament with more than 20 teams performing, will take place Thursday through Sunday at Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team of Janesville is seeking to win its second consecutive Wisconsin State title. For more information, visit http://www.aquaskiers.org/wi-state/.

5. The road to the 40th Barefoot Water Ski National Championships continues this weekend with the South Central Regional Barefoot Championships in Beaumont, Texas. Look for more information and links to scores at www.barefoot.org. The 40th Barefoot National Water Ski Championships will be held Aug. 1-5 at Lake Grew in Polk City, Fla.

6. With a worldwide mission to share water ski and wake sports experiences with new participants, the fourth annual #PassTheHandle initiative is scheduled for next Sunday. Four years ago, longtime industry leader and #PassTheHandle co-founder, Zane Schwenk, conceptualized the idea with wakeboarding legend Shaun Murray to share their passion with first-timers on a larger scale. Since then, the initiative has grown significantly through word of mouth, social media and participation. Teach a first-timer (to ride, ski, tube, etc.) on July 23 and share your photos and videos on social media with the hashtag: #PassTheHandle. For more information, including how you can create your own #PassTheHandle event, click here.

7. The local organizing committee for the 75th GOODE Water Ski National Championships is seeking volunteers to assist with several general duties during the four-day tournament in August. The Nationals, the world's largest three-event water ski tournament, will be held Aug. 9-12 at the San Marcos River Ranch in Martindale, Texas. An online SignUpGenius has been created to help organize volunteer needs and scheduling. To sign up, click here. For more information on the Nationals, visit www.waterskinationals.com
