7 U.S. Athletes Win Junior U.S. Open Titles

Seven U.S. water ski athletes won titles in respective events at the 17th Malibu Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships, June 24-25, at Ski Chaste Lake in Axis, Ala. The two-round, world-record capability event featured Junior Men and Junior Women (ages 17 to 21) and Boys and Girls divisions (ages 16 and under). Some of the world's top junior water ski athletes competed for titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall.

U.S. athletes winning titles were: Taylor Garcia (Winter Garden, Fla.), Junior Men slalom (3 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off), jumping (193 feet) and overall (3,000.0 points); Anna Gay (Winter Garden, Fla.), Junior Women tricks (6,640 points); Taylor Grathwohl (Martindale, Texas), Girls’ jumping (123 feet); Kennedy Hansen (Milton, Fla.), Girls’ tricks (6,560 points) and overall (2,919.0 points); Sean Hunter (Dothan, Ala.), Boys’ slalom (2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off); Allie Nicholson (Gallatin, Tenn.), Junior Women slalom (3 buoys at 38 feet off); and Will Roberts (Dow, Ill.), Boys’ jumping (168 feet).

Other event winners were: Aliaksandra Danisheuskay (Belarus), Junior Women jumping (154 feet) and overall (2,879.0 points); Diego Font (Mexico), Junior Men’s tricks (5,660 points); Patricio Font (Mexico), Boys’ tricks (9,760 points); Tobias Giorgis (Argentina), Boys’ overall (2,706.0 points); and Luisa Jaramillo (Colombia), Girls’ slalom (1 buoy at 38 feet off). Danisheuskay set a new Junior U.S. Open record of 164 feet (50.1 meters) in the preliminary round of Junior Women jumping. U.S. athlete Regina Jaquess set the previous record of 163 feet (49.6 meters) at the 2004 Junior U.S. Open.
