Mad-City Ski Team Wins Mercury Open

The Mad-City Ski Team (Madison, Wis.) won the 2017 Mercury Open on Saturday on the Rock River at Traxler Park in Janesville, Wis. Mad-City earned high-scoring awards for towboat driving, showmanship, overall show, barefoot and pyramid in scoring a grand total 1,573.5 points. The host Rock Aqua Jays, which had won the last eight Mercury Open titles, finished runner-up with 1,519.1 points, followed by the defending national champion Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team (Wonder Lake, Ill.) with 1,511.17 points.

In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by awarding points based on originality, presentation and execution. Elaborate costumes and staging intermix with music and fast action on the water as an announcer leads the audience through the show.
