Austin, Gay Win Junior Moomba Titles

U.S. water ski athletes Bailey Austin (Buda, Texas) and Anna Gay (Winter Garden, Fla.) won titles in respective events at the 2017 Junior Moomba Masters, March 8-9, in Melbourne, Australia. Athletes competed for titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall. The Junior Moomba Masters determines champions by the two-round scoring total.

Gay won her first career Junior Moomba Masters girls’ tricks and overall titles. She won tricks with a course record 10,440 points in round one and 10,220 points in round two. She also placed fifth in jumping (109 feet/113 feet) and seventh in slalom (1-1/2 buoys at 35 feet off/0 buoys at 35 feet off). She clinched the overall title with 2,597.90 points.

Austin won her second career Junior Moomba Masters girls’ slalom title, scoring a course-record 2-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off in round one and 2-1/2 buoys at 35 feet off in round two. U.S. athlete Alexandra Garcia (Winter Garden, Fla.) placed fifth with a score of 2 buoys at 35 feet off in both rounds, while Gay finished seventh (1-1/2 buoys at 35 feet off/0 buoys at 35 feet off).

U.S. athlete Ryan Canepa (Elk Grove, Calif.) placed third in boys’ slalom, 10th in tricks, ninth in jumping and sixth overall. Ryan Gay (Winter Garden, Fla.) placed seventh in boys' tricks. Emma Morgan (McQueeney, Texas) placed fourth in jumping, 13th in slalom, ninth in tricks and sixth overall.

Other Junior Moomba Masters champions were: Peru’s Alejandra De Osma, girls’ jumping; Mexico’s Patricio Font, boys’ slalom and tricks; Australia’s Ethan McKinnon, boys’ jumping; and Argentina’s Tobias Giorgis, boys’ overall.
