Jaquess, Smith Win Malibu Open Titles

U.S. elite water ski athletes Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) and Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) won titles in respective events at the 2014 Malibu Open Festival, Aug. 1-2, at Veteran's Park Lagoon in Milwaukee, Wis. Seven U.S. water ski athletes also won respective titles in the Under 17 and Under 21 slalom and jumping events.

The men's and women's elite slalom events consisted of head-to-head finales pitting the top-four competitors from the elimination round against each other. Jaquess won the women's slalom title for the third consecutive year, defeating Whitney McClintock (Canada) in the head-to-head finale with a score of 6 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off to McClintock’s 4 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off. Smith won the men's slalom title, defeating fellow U.S. athlete K.C. Wilson (Winter Springs, Fla.) in the head-to-head finale with a score of 6 buoys at 41 feet off to Wilson’s 1-1/2 buoys at 41 feet off.

In other events, Ryan Dodd (Canada) won the men’s jumping title, soaring 238 feet. U.S. athlete Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.), the two-time defending Malibu Open champion, finished runner-up with a 237-foot attempt. Jacinta Carroll (Australia) won the women’s jumping title with a distance of 173 feet on the first of her three jumping attempts.

Seven U.S. water ski athletes also won respective titles in the Under 17 and Under 21 slalom and jumping events.

Brie Carter (Loudon, Tenn.) won the Under 21 women's slalom title, defeating Taylor Woolsey (Orlando, Fla.) in a runoff for the title. After both skiers tied with scores of 1-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off, Carter won the title with a score of 3 buoys at 38 feet off to Woolsey’s score of 1 buoy at 38 feet off. Dane Mechler (Loveland, Ohio) won the Under 21 men’s slalom title, scoring 2-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off; Bailey Austin (Buda, Texas) won the Under 17 women's slalom title, scoring 2 buoys at 38 feet off; Abbi Grathwohl (Martindale, Texas) won the Under 17 women's jumping title with a distance of 118 feet; Nick Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.) won the Under 17 men's jumping title with a distance of 173 feet; Brittany Greenwood (Little Rock, Ark.) won the Under 21 women's jumping title with a distance of 143 feet; and Sam Greenwood (Little Rock, Ark.) won the Under 21 men's jumping title with a distance of 187 feet. In other events, Robert Pigozzi (Dominican Republic) won the Under 17 men's slalom title (4 buoys at 38 feet off).
