Rock Aqua Jays Win 2014 Mercury Open

AtkinsonThe Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team (Janesville, Wis.), the three-time defending national champion, kicked off its 2014 season by winning the Mercury Open Show Ski Invitational on June 21 on the Rock River in Janesville, Wis. The Rock Aqua Jays, which won show skiing's triple crown the Mercury Open, Wisconsin State Championships and Division 1 Nationals in 2013 for an unprecedented 10th time, finished with a grand total score of 1,887.77 points. The Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team (Wonder Lake, Ill.), tallied 1,837.4 points in finishing runner-up.

The Backwater Gamblers (Rock Island, Ill.) placed third with 1,793.77 points and the Muskego Waterbugs (Muskego, Wis.) placed fourth in the nine-team field with 1,312.9 points.

The Rock Aqua Jays earned top-scoring awards for pick-up boat crews, towboat driving, showmanship, sound crew, overall show, barefoot and pyramid.

In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by awarding points based on originality, presentation and execution.
