USA Water Ski has selected Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Brooke Baldwin (Windermere, Fla.) as its Male Athlete of the Month and Female Athlete of the Month, respectively, for May. Krueger and Baldwin are now eligible for the United States Olympic Committee’s Athlete of the Month honors.
Krueger, 39, set a new men's world jumping record of 250 feet (76.2 meters) on May 1 at the Isles Jump Jam 4 at the Isles of Lake Hancock in Winter Garden, Fla. The distance surpassed the former record of 247 feet (75.2 meters) set by Krueger in November 2008 at the McCormick Fall Open in Seffner, Fla. Krueger also finished second in men’s jumping with a distance of 218 feet (66.3 meters) at the 55th Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament, presented by Nautique, May 24-25, at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. Krueger entered the Masters coming off of two major wins in March at the Moomba Masters in Melbourne, Australia, and the IWWF Water Ski World Cup event in Mandurah, Australia.
Baldwin, 13, won the coveted Junior Women's overall title at the 22nd Junior Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament, presented by Nautique, on May 23 at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. Baldwin, who became the youngest competitor to ever win the Junior Women’s overall title at the Junior Masters, recorded scores of 2 buoys at 35 feet off in slalom, 6,670 points in tricks and a personal-best 111 feet in jumping to clinch the overall title with 2,845.5 points. She also placed second in tricks with her score of 6,670 points in the finals. The Junior Masters, one of the world’s most prestigious water ski tournaments, is for ages 18 and under, and to qualify, athletes must be ranked in the top five on the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation’s World Rankings List. Baldwin is currently ranked No. 1 in the world for Junior Women overall skiers. Baldwin also set a personal best in slalom with a score of 2 buoys at 38 feet off on May 17 at the Masters Last Chance Qualifier at Sunset Lakes in Groveland, Fla.
