USA Water Ski has selected Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) and Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) as its Male Athlete of the Month and Female Athlete of the Month, respectively, for August. The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team (Janesville, Wis.) was selected team of the month. Smith and Jaquess are now eligible for the United States Olympic Committee’s Athlete of the Month honors.
Smith won the Open Men slalom title at the 71st GOODE Water Ski National Championships, Aug. 13-17, in West Palm Beach, Fla., scoring 2-1/4 buoys at 41 feet off. Smith won the men’s slalom title at the 2013 MasterCraft Pro Water Ski Shootout, Aug. 8-9, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He recorded scores of 5 buoys at 41 feet off in round one, 3 buoys at 41 feet off in the finals, and 5 buoys at 41 feet off in the shootout (head-to-head finale) to clinch the title. Smith also won the Open Men slalom title at the 2013 Midwest Regional Water Ski Championships, Aug. 2-4, in Center City, Minn., scoring 1 buoy at 43 feet off – just one buoy shy of tying the existing men’s world slalom record that Smith currently shares with fellow U.S. athlete Chris Parrish.
Jaquess swept titles in Open Women slalom, tricks, jumping and overall at the 71st GOODE Water Ski National Championships, Aug. 13-17, in West Palm Beach, Fla. Jaquess recorded scores of 2 buoys at 41 feet off in slalom, 7,460 points in tricks, and 165 feet in jumping. Jaquess' 4,284.6 overall points earned her the prestigious Nautique Award, which is presented to the athlete with the highest overall score across all divisions at the Nationals.
The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team won the national team title at the 39th Indmar Marine Engines Division 1 Show Ski National Championships, presented by Central Florida's Polk County Sports Marketing, Aug. 9-11, on the Rock River at Shorewood Park in Loves Park, Ill. It was the Rock Aqua Jays' third consecutive and 18th overall national team title. The Rock Aqua Jays tallied 2,033.46 points in winning top awards for Dock & Equipment Personnel (tie), Showmanship, Sound Crew, Overall Show, Barefoot, Pyramid, Strap Doubles and Swivel. In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by awarding points based on execution, difficulty, spectator appeal and flow. Elaborate costumes and staging intermix with music and fast action on the water as an announcer leads the audience through the show.
