U.S. Athletes Win Junior U.S. Open Titles

Ten U.S. water ski athletes won titles in respective events at the 13th annual Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships, June 29-30, at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio. The two-round, world-record capability event featured Men and Women divisions (ages 17 to 21), in addition to Boys and Girls divisions (ages 16 and under). Some of the world's top junior water ski athletes competed for titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall.

U.S. athletes winning titles were: Bailey Austin (Buda, Texas), Girls' slalom (1 buoy at 38 feet off); Steven Brooks (Canyon Lake, Calif.), Men's jumping (167 feet); Christian DeVito (San Diego, Calif.), Boys' overall (2,187 points); Anna Gay (Winter Garden, Fla.), Girls' tricks (6,150 points); Abbi Grathwohl (McQueeney, Texas), Girls' jumping (108 feet) and overall (2,985 points); Erika Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.), Women's tricks (8,530 points) and overall (2,931 points); Nicholas Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.), Boys' jumping (162 feet); Dane Mechler (Loveland, Ohio), Men's slalom (2-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off); Lauren Morgan (Odessa, Fla.), Women's slalom (1-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off) and jumping (156 feet); and Dylan Schaffer (Owens Cross Roads, Ala.), Men's tricks (6,140 points) and overall (2,651 points).

Other athletes winning titles were: Mexico's Diego Font, Boys' tricks (7,130 points); and Canada's Jonah Shaffer, Boys' slalom (4 buoys at 38 feet off).

Erika Lang's score of 8,530 points is a new Junior U.S. Open record for Womens' tricks, eclipsing the mark of 7,910 points set by Australia's Michale Briant at the 2009 Junior U.S. Open.
