The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team won the 2013 Mercury Open Show Ski Tournament on Sunday at its home site on the Rock River in Janesville, Wis. Nine teams, including the top-five teams from last year's national championships, competed in the event at Traxler Park.
The Rock Aqua Jays, 17-time national champions, including the 2012 national champions, tallied 1,931 points in winning the Mercury Open for the ninth consecutive time. The Aquanuts (Twin Lakes, Wis.), 1,587 points; Wonder Lake (Wonder Lake, Ill.), 1,569 points; Water Bugs (Muskego, Wis.), 1,504 points; and Mad-City (Madison, Wis.), 1,469 points, rounded out the top-five placements.
The Rock Aqua Jays had the highest scores in dock and equipment personnel, pick-up boat crews, towboat driving, showmanship, sound crew, overall show plus barefoot, jump and pyramid acts.
The Mercury Open kick starts the show ski season and is the first opportunity of the year to see some of the nation’s top show ski teams unveil their new shows, costumes and acts. The Mercury Open also is the first leg of show skiing’s Triple Crown, followed by the Wisconsin State Show Ski Championships in July and the Show Ski National Championships in August. The Rock Aqua Jays have won nine Triple Crowns – the most of any show ski team – since 1981.
