Five water ski athletes will represent USA Water Ski at the 9th World Games, July 26-28, in Cali, Colombia. The World Games, first held in 1981, is an international multi-sport event meant for sports that are not contested in the Olympics. The World Games will feature three-event water skiing and wakeboarding this year, along with more than 30 other sports. The wakeboarding athletes have not yet been selected.
U.S. athletes selected to participate in the three-event water ski competitions are: Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.), women's slalom and jumping; Erika Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.), women's tricks; Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.), men's slalom; Adam Pickos (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.), men's tricks; and Zack Worden (Deltona, Fla.), men's jumping. The participating athletes – who compete solely for individual medals – were selected based on world overall rankings and availability.
Held every four years, the World Games is organized and governed by the International World Games Association, under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. More than 3,500 athletes from 100 nations and 40 sports competed in the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
