Herb O'Brien, a significant contributor to the design of water skis who developed O'Brien Skis into one of the largest manufacturers in the field in the 1970s and did the same with HO Sports in the 1990s, passed away on Monday. He was 68 years old.
O'Brien, a 2001 American Water Ski Educational Foundation Water Ski Hall of Fame Award of Distinction recipient, said his philosophy on ski design evolved in the 1960s. As skiing styles changed in the 1980s, O’Brien came up with new designs to complement new techniques.
He most recently founded Ronix Wakeboards and Radar Skis, where he continued his love of modifying skis to dramatically change the way a ski performed.
