In Memoriam – Dr. Thomas Strong, 1945-2020

Dr. Thomas Strong, the longtime water ski coach at the University of Alabama, passed away on Thursday, May 28. He was 74 years old. Beloved by students, alumni and colleagues throughout the nation, Dr. “Tom” Strong offered extraordinary care and support for students throughout his stellar 38-year career at the University of Alabama.

COVID-19 Announcements From NCWSA

The National Collegiate Water Ski Association has announced the postponement of the 2020 Collegiate Water Ski All-Stars Championships and the cancellation of the 2020 Team Trials for selection to the 2020 U.S. World University Water Ski Team. The 39th annual All-Stars tournament, originally scheduled for May 30-31 in Jacksonville, Ill., has been postponed until a date to be determined after June 30, 2020. The U.S. World University Water Ski Team was to be selected following Team Trials, but Team Trials was coupled with All-Stars and is now canceled due to team selection needing to occur prior to potential future 2020 NCWSA All-Stars dates. The NCWSA board of directors has opted to switch from Team Trials to using rankings for selection.

Bulletin No. 1 Available For FISU Worlds

Bulletin No. 1 for the 2020 FISU World University Waterski & Wakeboard Championships is now available. The 8th FISU Worlds will take place Sept. 22-27, 2020, at the Sentosa venue in Dnipro, Ukraine.

NCWSA Announces Hall of Fame Inductees

Jeff Surdej, chairman of the National Collegiate Water Ski Association, reports that Jimmy Siemers, Ed and Carole Walker, and Phil Chase will be the 2020 inductees into the NCWSA Hall of Fame. That was one of several announcements following the NCWSA’s mid-winter board of directors meeting on Jan. 24 in Auburndale, Fla.

2022 FISU Worlds Awarded To Belarus

The Championships Department at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) has announced that the FISU Executive Committee has attributed the 2022 FISU World University Water Ski & Wakeboard Championships to the city of Minsk, Belarus. The event is officially rewarded to the Belarus Republican Center of Physical Education and Sports for Pupils and Students, the governing body of university sports in that country. However, it will be hosted by an organizing committee that includes the NUSF, the City of Minsk and the Belarus Waterski & Wakeboard Federation, with support of the IWWF World University Commission.

ULL Wins Syndicate Collegiate Nationals

The University of Louisiana-Lafayette water ski team won the Division 1 national title at the Syndicate Waterskis 41st Collegiate Water Ski National Championships, Oct. 10-12, at Bell Acqua Lakes in Rio Linda, Calif. The Ragin’ Cajuns tallied 12,680 points in winning their first national title since 2015 and seventh since the inception of the tournament in 1979. Alabama finished second with 12,275 points. Three-time defending champion Louisiana-Monroe, which tallied 11,855 points, placed third. Florida Southern College finished fourth with 10,790 points and Rollins College was fifth with 9,250 points.

Midwest Region Wins Collegiate All-Stars

The National Collegiate Water Ski Association’s Midwest Region won the coveted team title at the 38th Collegiate All-Stars Water Ski Championships, May 18-19, at Swerve Watersports Center in Hillsboro, Tenn. The two-day event included the top-10 men and top-10 women from each of the NCWSA's four regions vying for the regional team title and individual titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall.

HO To Title Sponsor NCWSA Nationals

HO Sports, an Official Sponsor of USA Water Ski & Wake Sports, has agreed to terms with USA Water Ski & Wake Sports and the National Collegiate Water Ski Association to be the title sponsor for the 2019 and 2020 Collegiate Water Ski National Championships. The HO Sports 41st Collegiate Water Ski National Championships will be held Oct. 10-12, 2019 at Bell Aqua Lakes in Rio Linda, Calif. The HO Sports 42nd Collegiate Water Ski National Championships will be held in Oct. 22-24, 2020 at The Boarding School in Orlando, Fla.

NCWSA Announces Hall of Fame Class

The National Collegiate Water Ski Association has announced the four individuals who will be inducted into the NCWSA Hall of Fame in 2019. This year’s Hall of Fame Class, which was voted on by the NCWSA board of directors on Jan. 25, is comprised of Marcus Brown, Regina Jaquess, Steve Tyler (posthumously) and Libby Van Treese.
