2020 Barefoot Nationals Cancelled

William FarrellThe American Barefoot Club’s board of directors has voted to cancel the 2020 Barefoot Water Ski National Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 43rd Barefoot Nationals was scheduled for Aug. 20-23 in Polk City, Fla. The 2020 Jim Boyette Southern Regional Barefoot Water Ski Championships remains scheduled at this time for Aug. 15-16 in Polk City, Fla.

NSSA Nationals' Entry Forms Posted

Entry forms for the 2020 Indmar Marine Engines NSSA Individual Show Ski Nationals, presented by Polk County Sports Marketing & Tourism, are now available to view and download. The tournament will be held Aug. 8 at Traxler Park in Janesville, Wis. The Entry Deadline is July 20. Tournament information is subject to change based on City of Janesville approvals and/or uncontrollable developments related to Covid-19. Registration fees will be refunded if the tournament is cancelled for any reason.

NSSA To Hold Individual Nationals

Molly Schaefer, 2019 national swivel championThe National Show Ski Association’s board of directors voted on Monday to cancel D1 and D2 team nationals and instead hold a consolidated NSSA Individual Show Ski Nationals event. Following a difficult and thoughtful process, the NSSA Covid-19 Ad Hoc Committee brought this proposal before the NSSA board and it passed resoundingly. The committee priorities used to come to this conclusion were: 1.) safety first, 2.) provide opportunity, 3.) sport-guided decision making. This continues to be a fluid situation and further refinements are possible but currently the tournament details are as follows.

Towboat Draw Set For GOODE Nationals

The Towboat Draw for the 78th GOODE Water Ski National Championships is now available to view and download. The Nationals will be held Aug. 4-8 at Tri-Lakes in Zachary, La. Towboat manufacturers Malibu, MasterCraft and Nautique will pull the Nationals.

In Memoriam – Jim McCormick, 1944-2020

Jim McCormick, who was involved in water skiing for more than 50 years as a competitor, coach, innovator, and pioneer died on June 20. He was 75 years old. Jim coached some of the sport's greatest athletes, including Sammy Duvall, Wayne Grimditch, Mike Hazelwood, Bob LaPoint, Kris LaPoint, Nicholas Le Forestier, Patrice Martin, Karin Roberge, Ron Scarpa, Don Thompson, and Christie Weir, just to name a few. He also coached junior and elite teams from Belgium, France, Canada, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and the United States. He helped design slalom skis with Cypress Gardens; and worked with Correct Craft on R&D for new boats.
